A Family Story
In 1962 ‘The Cheese Shop’ opened its doors in Villanova Pennsylvania. At the time, it was a franchise of the same name. Introducing the concept of gourmet cheeses and foods to the western suburbs of Philadelphia was its mission.
In 1969 when Betts Sellers McCoy took over the shop and changed the name to Villanova Cheese Shop, Inc., she began to educate the public. She became well known in food circles and many credit her with bringing a taste of Europe to the tables of many of Philadelphia’s restaurants and homes.
By 1980 Betts was ready to retire. Her Daughter, Susan McCoy was already trained and ready to take over where her mother left off. The business continued to grow. In 1982 Sue took on a partner, John Fissinger. (26 years later, they have 3 boys, who are also learning about cheese and, working in the warehouse). We are a Family business. Over the years, we have become knowledgeable about gourmet foods, cheeses, and making cheese spreads, and have a combined 65 years of experience, not including our sons.
In 1996 we were looking for an outlet for that experience and decided to market our line of cheese spreads. It was an obvious outgrowth. We worked to develop new flavors and make contacts in distribution and sales.
In 1997 with 12 different flavors, which had been tested in our shops, we began marketing them to retailers and were met with immediate success.
In 1998, Genuardis Family Markets took on 8 flavors, after they had been tested in several of their new stores. The Cheese Spreads flew off the shelves, and the beginning of a successful business relationship began.
We broke into the Baltimore/Washington market in 2000 and continue to have success. We sell to gourmet food stores in the east from Massachusetts to North Carolina, the west from California to Washington and all thru out the Midwest and Southwest, 32 states in all.
We continue to grow and bring new and exciting flavors to the market and are currently developing a full line of organic cheese spreads.
Our mission is to offer gourmet cheese spreads that are consistently delicious, excellent and bring customers back.
Sincerely, John & Sue Fissinger |
